Restoration of two extraordinary Pannemaker tapestries completed

20 May 2010

"On the occasion of the exhibition to be held at the Museo del Prado from 1 June to 26 September 2010, entitled "The Loves of Mercury and Herse. A rich tapestry by Willem Pannemaker", the Royal Tapestry Factory has completed, under the supervision and at the expense of the Ducal House of Medinaceli Foundation, the restoration of the two tapestries it owns from an exceptional series of eight, a masterpiece that the great Flemish Renaissance tapestry maker wove around 1570 for an as yet unknown client, perhaps the 4th Duke of Medinaceli. Its first documented owner was the 1st Duke of Lerma, private of Philip III and, by testamentary decision of the 2nd Duchess of Lerma, it became part of the collection of the House of Medinaceli in 1673, where it remained until its dispersal in 1909".
