"Niños Spínola ante el Puerto de Génova", new pictorial acquisition of the Fundación Casa Ducal de Medinaceli

24 July 2024

The Fundación Casa Ducal de Medinaceli has recently acquired a painting of two children's portraits of the two sons of Ambrosio Spínola, the future 1st Marquis of Los Balbases, in front of the port of Genoa in 1606. This canvas entered the Medinaceli collection at the beginning of the 18th century with the marriage of the 10th Duke of Medinaceli, Nicolás Fernández de Córdoba, to the daughter of the 4th Marquis of Los Balbases, Jerónima María Spínola de la Cerda, and was separated from her at the end of the 19th century in the will of the 15th Duke of Medinaceli, forming part of the inheritance received by Carlos María Fernández de Córdoba y Pérez de Barradas. His widow, María de los Ángeles de Medina Garvey, bequeathed part of this collection to the Prado, leaving the rest to her nephews and nieces. This particular painting belonged to the Count of Mejorada, whose heirs sold it and it finally reached the Ansorena auction house, where the Foundation, in fulfilment of its founding purpose of recovering the historical heritage linked to the house of Medinaceli or its dependants, has acquired it.
