Palacio de los Cobos

Úbeda, Jaén

The refurbishment of this palace, which extended the old mansion in which his parents lived, was begun by Don Francisco de los Cobos, Universal Secretary of Charles V, in 1530. More than a residence, his purpose was to leave a record in his native city of the prestige achieved by someone who had left it as a simple nobleman. This extension was part of an ambitious project that envisaged, in addition to this house for life, another for death, the Sacred Chapel of the Saviour, a monastery and a university. Cobos commissioned the extension project to Luis de Vega, a Castilian architect who a few years earlier had directed the work on the palace he owned in Valladolid, next to San Pablo.
