Pazo de Oca
A Estrada, Pontevedra
"Generalife of the North", "Versalles Gallego"Those who have written about this monument of stone and vegetal architecture have had to resort to comparisons with these universally known ensembles to mean both the singularity and transcendence of the most stately and best preserved of the Galician pazos (manor houses). The simile, despite its hyperbolic appearance, rightly evokes that, although constructed far away from the Court, the reference in its design was the Baroque court garden which was introduced in Spain at the beginning of the 18th century, with the arrival of French architects and gardeners at the court of the first Bourbon king, Philip V, a novelty which began to be applied in Oca very early on, in the 1720s, by the VI Lord of Oca, married to the Countess of Amarante, one of the ladies-in-waiting of Queen Isabella of Farnese.
