Dissemination of an invocation

More than three centuries after the arrival in Madrid of the image of Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno, the most remarkable thing about it is not only the devotion that the people of Madrid show to it every first Friday of March and every Holy Week, but also its capacity to continue spreading the cult throughout the peninsula and even beyond. Thus then the geography of the spread of this devotion, as in that of the institutional organisation of its worship around Confraternities and Brotherhoods, three maps overlap, that of the Trinitarian convents, that of the Capuchin monasteries and that of the seigneuries of the House of Medinaceli and its aggregates, its main promoters. The extent of its iconography is shown in the vocabulary of the brotherhoods, for which the expressions ".a Medinaceli" o "a Captive"have become equivalent. In this section you can find out the geographical extent of this iconography and its devotion in Spain, according to a catalogue by Emilio Iglesias Velasco, which was published in the book Jesús de Medinaceli, Cautivo y Rescatado: Devotional History and Geographypublished by the Ducal House of Medinaceli Foundation on the occasion of the IX National Congress of Brotherhoods and Confraternities of Medinaceliheld at the Casa de Pilatos in Seville in the spring of 2011. From this catalogue, which contains 296 images with the characteristic iconography of Jesús de Medinaceli, under his various historical names -196 with the name of Medinaceli, 70 called Cautivos and 30 Rescatados-, we present here only the essential data relating to each image.
