Roman senator in early imperial toga

Roman workshop
1st century AD

Carved from a single block of white marble, it depicts a Roman senator in toga, sandals and scrinium, which, being on the ground, serves as a support for the sculpture. Like most works of this type, which were produced almost in series, it lacks a right forearm, as this, like the head and hands, were sculpted separately and added later to portray the sitter. The right hand is from the modern period, but not the head, which is contemporary with the whole group, dating from between the reigns of Augustus and Tiberius.
