Copy of the portrait of Cardinal Tavera by El Greco.

Tristán, Luis [Attributed to].
17th century

This is one of the three portraits, all posthumous, that are kept in the hospital of San Juan Bautista, commonly known as Tavera, of its founder, the Cardinal of the Church, Juan Pardo Tavera, with the title of San Juan ante Portam Latinam. The half-length composition with cardinal's robes and biretta on a table with a book on which he rests his left hand is identical to the one painted by El Greco, of which this is a copy, with very different chromaticism, attributed to his best disciple, Luis Tristán.
