The Evangelist is depicted standing on a dark, almost monochrome background, in which only the head of the bull that tradition gave him as an attribute stands out, and with a colour range complementary to that of the other three Evangelists with whom he forms a series, a sense of colour based, according to Valdivieso (2023), on the Sevillian tradition, inherited from Juan de Roelas, with which he sought "... to create a colour range that is complementary to that of the other three Evangelists with whom he forms a series.a harmonious balance that perfectly matched the restrained and serene sense of most of his figures.".
