Portrait of a Roman lady from the early reign of Trajan.

Like many of the busts in the collection of the 1st Duke of Alcalá, it is made up of two pieces of different origins, although in this case of similar chronology. The head is carved in pinkish-white marble and has a hairstyle divided into three levels, with a harmoniously separated curl and finished off in a chignon by a fine braid, which allows us to date it to the beginning of the reign of Trajan (ca. AD 98). The bust, carved on white veined marble, is also a Roman original made between the reigns of Trajan and Hadrian (ca. AD 117). The chin, although split and glued, may be original, but not the nose, which has been reconstructed in plaster, possibly by the sculptor whom the 1st Duke of Alcalá commissioned to restore his collection, Giuliano Menichini.
