Praying statue of Francisco de Acebedo

Pinedo, Gabriel de
1617

The contract of 1612 states that this praying statue was to be carved by Esteban Fernández and, in the event that he did not fulfil the commission, Gabriel de Pinedo, both sculptors from Soria, of the Romanist trend, who must have had some kind of common partnership and who basically worked in the bishoprics of Burgos and Osma, was obliged to do it. It states that "the other is to be in the person of Don Francisco de Acevedo, also a brother of his lordship, Merino Mayor de la Merindad de Trasmiera, of the abito de secular, with his staff and seat with his cloak, according to and in the form that will be arranged by the models that were to be given to the said Esteban Fernandez."(Losada Varea, 2007).

As the second of the four surviving sons of the eleven children Juan González de Acebedo had, he remained in Trasmiera to look after the family estate, taking the surname of his father, González de Acebedo, and marrying María Martínez de Bracamonte, with whom he had seven children. This is the way in which the palatial ensemble, which his younger brother Fernando, who also commissioned the sculptures, ordered to be carved in his native Hoznayo, ended up in the house of Medinaceli.

The title of Merino Mayor de Trasmiera to which his inscription refers was acquired by his older brother, Juan Bautista, in 1606 and carried with it the power to appoint six merinos and the right to present the bailiffs at the Juntas of Trasmiera.
