Portrait of Fernando Fernández de Córdoba y Pérez de Barradas, XIV Duke of Lerma

Circa 1941

Portrait of Fernando Fernández de Córdoba y Pérez de Barradas, 14th Duke of Lerma, dressed in the dress uniform of the Real Maestranza de Caballería de Zaragoza. This Duke of Lerma was the son of the 15th Duke of Medinaceli, Luis Tomás Fernández de Córdoba and Angela Pérez de Barradas, better known by the title of Duchess of Denia, which she used during her widowhood. He married María Luisa Bahía y Chacón in 1918 and when she was widowed as a result of her husband's murder at the beginning of the Civil War she decided to set up a foundation in his memory with the dual purpose of educating orphaned girls and creating a museum with the works of art her husband had inherited from his parents, the latter purpose for which his nephew, Luis Jesús Fernández de Córdoba, 17th Duke of Medinaceli, gave her a wing of the Hospital Tavera in Toledo, the monument that forms the background to this posthumous portrait.
