Helmet with feather crest removed from Pallas Pacifera

Duquesnoy, François [Attributed to].
17th century

This helmet, with a collar and feather crest, is one of the ornaments removed from Pallas Pacifera in 1957, along with the shield and the mace. Its front is carved with eye holes simulating the face of an owl, and the sides are decorated with two medi-reliefs: on the right, the fight between lapiths and centaurs, and on the left, an episode from the theft of Geryon's bulls, in which Hercules, whose nakedness leaves the lion skin of Nemea entirely exposed, armed with his spike, leaps over Geryon's bull to attack Cacus, who tries to steal it by dragging it by the tail. A lion and a lioness on each side of the neckguard complete the ornamentation.
