Claudian period dignitary in toga

Roman workshop
1st century AD

Carved from a single block of marble, it lacks the left hand and the right forearm, elements which, together with the head, were sculpted separately. This life-size sculpture, dressed in a tunic and toga, also bears the ".calcei senatorii"It is accompanied on the lower left side by a cylindrical scrinium, which serves as a point of support. Professor Markus Trunk, in his catalogue of the collection of the 1st Duke of Alcalá, considered the head to be a modern work added in the 16th century. However, a more detailed analysis of the head, carried out when it was cleaned and consolidated, has made it possible to correct its dating and consider it to be an original portrait from the Claudian period, although with the face deeply retouched in modern times.
