Bust of Aphrodite, Roman replica of a pre-Hellenistic original from 300 BC.

Roman workshop
1st century AD

The head, carved in pinkish white marble without veins, is a copy made in the middle of the 1st century AD, during the reign of Tiberius or Claudius, of a pre-Hellenistic original that can be dated to around 300 BC. The bust is in pure white marble, possibly Renaissance (16th century). The head is adorned with an elaborate hairstyle with a high, elegant chignon which, together with the sweetness of the face, allows us to identify it as a variation of the "Capitoline Venus" type. The bust must have been made, ex profeso to complete the head, in the 16th century, as indicated by the locks, which fall carefully over the shoulders, continuing the old ones that begin on the head. It is therefore very likely to be the work of the sculptor Giuliano Menichini, who was commissioned by the 1st Duke of Alcalá, both in Naples and in Seville, to restore his collection.
