Battaglioli, Francesco

1725, Modena - 1796, Venice

A view painter and scenographer, he was born in Modena around 1725, from where he moved to Venice in the late 1740s and became one of the view painters. In 1754, he travelled to Spain at the request of the most influential figure at the court of Ferdinand VI, the singer Farinelli, to replace Antonio Joli as "...".pintor of the royal coliseums of Buen Retiro and Aranjuez"He was offered the same salary, which indicates that he must have already enjoyed a certain prestige as a stage designer. During the six years he spent in Spain he carried out extensive scenographic work in both royal coliseums and painted descriptive scenes of the recreational areas of the new, populous and festive court of King Ferdinand VI and Queen Bárbara de Braganza. On the king's death in 1759, his half-brother Charles III, who had little interest in opera, dispensed with his services, forcing him to return to Venice. Twelve years after his return, he was appointed a member of the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice and in 1776 he succeeded Antonio Visentini as professor of perspective at that institution until his retirement in 1789.
