El Greco's Tabernacle with the Risen Christ has returned to the sacristy of the Hospital Tavera in Toledo after taking part in the exhibition of the Cretan's work held at the Grand Palais in Paris from 16 October to 10 February. This work, which was commissioned by his friend Pedro Salazar de Mendoza, the hospital's administrator, between 1595 and 1598, presided over the section "El Greco, architect and sculptor" as it is both an exceptional testimony to the artist's architectural conceptions and the only documented example of his sculptural oeuvre. It is also an ingenious and complex mechanism whose liturgical function has not been revealed to date by the known documentation.
