The orchard of the Palacio de Oca towards its splendour

2 September 2011

The pazo of Oca still retains the dual character of a recreational garden and a productive orchard which it was created to serve the eighteenth-century ideal of perfect harmony between utility and beauty. That is why the Ducal House of Medinaceli Foundation places special emphasis in its conservation on ensuring that, together with specimens of great botanical value or ornamental plantations such as a collection of camellias, commercial plantations such as kiwis, vines, historical collections of apple trees or an ornamental orchard such as the one shown in the photographs, which occupies three large flowerbeds, from the pond to the wall, along the Paseo de los Tilos, more than 7,000 m2 in total. In this orchard, in addition to the care taken with the alignments and geometry, traditional forms of cultivation are still practised, based on organic fertilisation, association and crop rotation.
