Portuguese School 16th century
16th century

This portrait of King John II of Portugal (1481-1495) dates from the late 16th century, a copy of a 15th-century Portuguese original. It bears an inscription in the upper border. It is a full-length portrait in which the sitter is dressed in black and holds a letter in his hand. It is an interesting copy of an early Portuguese painting reminiscent of the school of Nuño Gonçalves.
